FEBRUARY READ ALOUD-PETE THE CAT VALENTINE'S DAY IS COOL

It's time for February's read aloud and freebie! I hope you and your kiddos enjoyed last month's read aloud and FREE craftivity for Snowmen at Night! If you missed last month's post, no worries!

If you are new to Pages Of Grace, let me fill you in :) I LOVE incorporating holiday and seasonal fun with math & ELA! It can be so hard to meet all of the standards each day, let alone have time for holiday and seasonal activities. That's why I create learning activities that do both! If you would love to incorporate more holiday and seasonal fun without sacrificing valuable learning time, be sure to sign up for my VIP email list to receive ideas and exclusive FREE resources with each new season.

As we started planning our units for February, we found this Pete the Cat book and knew we had to check it out! It seems like Pete is everywhere right now, so what better time than now to incorporate him into one of our monthly read aloud activities :)

In this book, Pete isn't so sure about Valentine's Day, but his good friend helps him see that it's all about appreciating the special people in our lives. Valentine's Day isn't just about mushy gushy
love ;) My kiddos and I talk about how we love and appreciate our family, friends, neighbors, teachers, and all of the people who have a positive impact on our lives.

I created a fun (and free!) ELA activity for you to do with this book. It's about common and proper nouns. Now that our kiddos have mastered nouns, I wanted to introduce them to the difference between common nouns and proper nouns.  This activity has kiddos looking at nouns in the book and determining if those words are common nouns or proper nouns.

If you haven't yet introduced common vs proper nouns, this is a great activity to do it with. Your kiddos will be super engaged with this activity, since all of the nouns are words form the book. If your kiddos already know about proper nouns, this is great activity to allow them to practice and review proper nouns. I hope you and your kiddos enjoy this activity!

If you do this activity with your kiddos, I would love to know how it goes!  Come back and leave a comment below telling me all about it :)

UNIQUE AS A SNOWFLAKE

Every child is unique and special. From their appearances to their strengths to their personalities, each child is one of a kind and should be celebrated. Since we are still covered in record breaking snow, I thought this would be a great time to do this fun snowflake activity!

Just like our kiddos, every snowflake is unique and one of a kind. While the overall look may be similar, it's the small details that make each one special.

INTRODUCE THIS ACTIVITY BY TALKING ABOUT THE CHARACTERISTICS OF SNOWFLAKES

1. What do snowflakes look like?

2. Sometimes we see big fluffy snowflakes, and other times we see little tiny snowflakes. Different storms bring different snowflakes.

3. If we look closely at a snowflake, we can see the tiny details. Each one is a little bit different from the others. They are all unique and special.

TALK ABOUT THE THINGS THAT MAKE EACH OF US UNIQUE

1. Everyone looks uniquely different, and those differences are uniquely and equally beautiful.

2. Everyone has different strengths. Some are great at writing, others are great at arts, and others are great at sports.

3. Everyone has different personalities. Some people are silly, while others are more serious. Some people like to be in the spotlight, and others like to work behind the scenes.

EACH KIDDO MAKES A LIST OF 6 THINGS THAT MAKES HIM/HER UNIQUE & SPECIAL

My kiddos listed things like physical traits, sports, academics, medical situations, and helping others.

PREPARE THE SNOWFLAKES

Here's what you need to make the snowflakes:

3 strips of white cardstock for each student (ours were 8.5 inches by 1.5 inches)
Background paper in any color
Scrapbook scissors
Glitter, sequins, rhinestones, puff paint (any type of decorative pieces)

Give students 3 strips of white cardstock, and allow them to choose a pair of scrapbook scissors. Students will use the scrapbook scissors to trim the edges of the white strips. Depending on your kiddos' ages, they can do this step themselves, or someone can help them (or you can skip this step).

ASSEMBLE THE SNOWFLAKES

Glue the strips of white paper on the background paper to make the snowflake shape. Leave a little space at either the top or the bottom (this is where they will write their names). Glue some kind of embellishment on the center of the snowflake.

When the pieces are dry, the students will write their 6 special traits on the snowflakes. The writing can be done in any color or style.

DECORATE THE SNOWFLAKES

Now it's time to decorate! Use any kind of embellishments or art medium to decorate the snowflakes. Glitter, sequins, rhinestones, puff paint, buttons, or crayons are all great options. Turn on some music, and let the kiddos use their creativity to make their snowflakes uniquely their own :)

This one was done by my 6 year old.

If you do this activity with your kiddos, I would love to hear about! Leave a comment or a picture below :)

JANUARY READ ALOUD---SNOWMEN AT NIGHT

Wow! It's a new year! Happy 2017! I hope you had an amazing Christmas and enjoyed some time off! Whether you are a classroom teacher or a homeschool mom, I know you work soooo hard, and you definitely deserve a break once in awhile! Getting back in the swing of things after Christmas vacation can be a little rough. A great read aloud with some fun activities can help us ease back into things :)

I hope you and your kiddos enjoyed last month's read aloud and FREE printable for Click, Clack, Ho! Ho! Ho! If you missed last month's post, no worries! You can grab it right HERE!

If you are new to Pages Of Grace, let me fill you in :) I LOVE incorporating holiday and seasonal fun with math & ELA! It can be so hard to meet all of the standards each day, let alone have time for holiday and seasonal activities. That's why I create learning activities that do both! January brings snow in lots of places, so what better time to read Snowmen at Night than now?! If you don't live in a place where it snows, you'll have to use your imagination ;) Snowmen at Night is one of our favorite winter books! There are so many ways to use this book with our students. Here are two of my favorite Snowmen at Night activities.

1. Reader's Theater

Snowmen at Night is a great book for Reader's Theater! My students always had a blast doing this! It's a great way to get students moving and also provides great practice speaking in front of others in a non stressful way. Depending on the number of students in your class, give each student a line or two. Then each student will come up with some kind of action to do while reading the line.

For example: "After everyone has had a chance at racing once or twice, they go on over to the pond to do skating tricks on ice." The student might say this line while pretending like he is ice skating.

When everyone has memorized the lines and actions, the students line up in the order of the book. One by one, each student performs his/her line and action. If you have a buddy class or any other class available, it's fun for the students to perform the reader's theater for other students :)

2. What my Snowman Does at Night

Use this FREE template for a fun craftivity!

This craftivity is a fun way to incorporate writing with a little winter craft :) After reading the book, talk about all of the silly things that the snowmen did at night. Then have students do a think-pair-share, where they think about an idea and then talk about it with a partner. Students will imagine that they made a snowman and come up with something silly that their snowman did at night.

Students will then use this template to write about their snowmen. There are a variety of pieces to choose from to decorate the snowmen. You can give each student a whole set and let them choose, or you can print a few of each and have them take turns choosing pieces.

If you do a reader's theater or this craftivity with your students, I would love to hear about it! Please come back to my website, and leave a comment telling me how it went :)

It's officially Christmas season!! I know it's proper protocol to hold off on decorating until after Thanksgiving, but do we ever wait? Nope! We don't get everything out, but the outdoor lights and the Christmas trees (yep, that's plural...we have one in every room!) make their appearance as soon as the Halloween candy is gone ;) I know you love decorating, too!
